T Tuesday: eventful week edition

I guess I should actually say an eventful week and a half, both good and bad. I’ll start my tale at the bad beginning…

Two Friday’s ago we awoke to a flooded basement. Completely soaked carpet and over half the basement wet. It could have been much worse…it was our water softener that caused the mess so relatively clean water. I didn’t mention my mess on the blog last Tuesday as we were celebrating the 3rd anniversary of T stands for Tuesday!

On Tuesday I mentioned that we’d be out and about like usual for our Tuesday. We were heading to my inlaws (where incidentally we were planning to go to flood Friday) when something hit my drivers side window and it exploded in on me. I was in the inner lane driving 50mph in traffic.  This is where my school bus driving days had me at an advantage with sheer experience on the road. I was able to pull over and figure out what I was going to do. I ended up driving back home after stopping at a hardware store to get something to at least clean the glass off me and my seat.

I had some small cuts on my arm and embedded glass under my leg that I must have ground in as I drove. Adrenaline…never felt it until later although Mini-me did get out the first aid kit and cleaned up the blood a bit as I scooped glass from the van. Mini-me had a couple tiny pieces in her leg as well…small enough that we used duct tape to remove them. J was spared as he was in the passenger seat of the minivan. Again…things could have been much worse! I could have lost control and gotten into a wreck.

This is were my tale turns for the better… My neighbor decided last minute to have a garage sale so I was going through the house trying to dig up some things to sell.  We did ok but ended up spending most of our profits on a new hutch…well, new to us. Our neighbors just remodeled their kitchen. We took it home thinking we could use it for storage in our game area.

Looked pretty good there…

and Marvin also approved. Then overnight Mr. G had a bout of insomnia and realized that perhaps the hutch would be better served in our dining room. So we moved it again….back up the stairs it had come down….

This way we are able to actually see the beautiful set of dishes from my paternal Grandma.

As I age I am looking more and more like her, at least in my opinion.

I feel as if I’m at Downton Abbey when I open these doors. I think it’s the big soup tureen that gives me that feeling. Love, love, love these dishes! Notice all the tea cups… full set of 12. Anyone want to join me for tea? As a kid my mom had them out only on holidays or when we had “fancy” company. These are certainly not my everyday dishes but we do try to use them occasionally because otherwise…what’s the point?!

We decided to take the door off the one side and just use open shelving.  It’s amazing how much more open it feels with that simple subtraction of the door. Marvin went back to his favorite spot next to the door…that way he can keep track of everyone’s comings and goings.

He’s just so dang cute! I’m planning to put a little curtain across the wine rack area to keep them in the dark. I was thinking it might be fun to use a vintage table cloth  as my fabric. Perhaps I’ll make a matching mixer cover at the same time.

Our new hutch took the place of our old buffet. The buffet now resides in the game area.

It really looks nice there and holds a ton of games. So after all the heavy lifting and switching things around we sat down and played a family game and got thoroughly trounced by Mini-me.

Thanks for sticking with me through my long post.  I have no idea what Tuesday has in store for me…other than I feel as if perhaps I should just stay home.

What are you doing today?

oooh starting at the end… your folk art hutch is a real treasure and how fun to find a new place to enjoy it.
Your new hutch does look fab and extra cool as you said with the door removed.
Marvin has very good taste indeed!
So glad you kept control on the highway with your broken window situation.
It is definitely a time when you have to stop your mind from racing to what could have happened.
Stay safe and Happy T Day Halle ♥

oh that hutch at the end-LOVE!!! I like how Marvin immediately claimed part of your new hutch:) It really does showcase that beautiful set of dishes in your dining room, and the door removal for wine bottles is a great idea.
Did you figure out what happened to shatter your glass? That must have been such a scary experience and as you said, thankfully it wasn’t more serious-yikes!
Wishing you a much better week and a happy T day too!

Sorry to hear about the flood….hope things have dried up.

What caused your widow to implode? Thank goodness you are a skilled driver. I shutter to think how bad it could have been.

What a week. I knew about the flood, which was a LOT easier to clean up than mine has been, since mine came in from the outside, but the accident threw me. It was a good thing you had your camera with you. Not to share for T, but to show the insurance company.

Mr. Hobbies (he’s going to like that) sleep deprivation may have proved to be the best thing for the trading of those two units. Now that your lovely china is in plain sight, and easily accessible, it will be easier to use on more than just “special” occasions. I like how both ended up.

Marvin cracks me up. Reminds me of Squiggles and his needing to be near me. So glad you shared your adventures and your lovely dishes and tea cups with us for T this Tuesday.

Gosh what a week you have had. So pleased to read your accident on the road turned out well for you, its thoughts of what could have happened that need forgetting.
Your hutch, we call a dresser in the UK looks beautiful with all your precious crockery on display. I love how Marvin had his first claim on its uses, that is one cute cat.
    Happy T Day

That must have been scary when the window in the car came crashing in. Glad you were able to handle it without more damage.
The hutch it its new home looks great and what a wonderful place for those special dishes. The buffet workes for the games too. A win win situation. It is hard to move heavy furniture around but when it works (as yours did) it is worth it.

Okay Halle i’m tired now…lol My goodness so glad that did not turn into a terrible accident as it so easily could have. You even had the kids in the car! Did you ever figure out what hit you?? Whew!

Well you KNOW i totally get the idea that someone else’s trash can be your treasure..lol I had a little treasuehunt myself this past week… I’ll have to share what i found too…

Your cat is too adorable…. Jinx hates HATES a closed door and when it is opened he feels it is his duty to you know check things out… So many times he has gotten closed in closet or some such when i didn’t realize he had popped in there and i shut the door… Only later did i hear the scratching at the door and pitiful meowing to be let out…lol Happy T day my dear! Hugs! deb

What a week! I’m so sorry about your flooding and car problem. I’m glad that didn’t end up worse and that your experience saved you from a worse outcome. Both those pieces of furniture are treasures, and I can see how you’d need to try the different positions to really decide. Your dishes do look perfect there :) Happy T Tuesday!

Well done you for keeping in control of the car. Did you ever find out what hit you?
How annoying about the flood! I hope you have everything dried and cleaned up now and your water softener repaired.
I just love your old hutch! And I spied some interesting games. I saw Settlers of Catan, which is a book I read. I know the book was made after the game but I have never seen the game. I love board games but have nobody to play them with. (My husband is not interested). We used to play them a lot when I was younger (at home). Perhaps you can dedicate a blogpost to your games and which one is your favorite. Just put a drink in one of the pictures and everybody’s happy.
Your new hutch is coming into its own there. It looks really nice with the wine bottles. And your grandma’s tea set is something else! Wow! You can be very proud of that. Beautiful!
Your grandma is(was) a very pretty woman, so if you are looking like her….lucky you.
Thank you for such an interesting post. I enjoyed it very much.
    Happy T-Day,
    Lisca

I am afraid I have got behind with seeing your blog posts(in fact most folk’s blog posts) I hope to have a good catch up next week but as I am here for T stands for…I must say how awful it must have been for you to have your window smashed in while you were driving – thank goodness you kept your head! What great furniture change around – that china looks amazing and is displayed so well now! Hugs, Chrisx

wow. had to come looking to find out about the hutch…beautiful! So glad you and the kids are ok after the windshield incident!! I got a stone thrown up this week too, but it just made a “bullet hole” type of mark. I can’t imagine coping with the whole windshield going…you must be pretty calm in emergencies! Love the vintage photo…so adorable! she’s lovely…
