A second look: Asian theme altered book

Last updated : April 10, 2016

I decided to dig deep in the blog history for Second on the 2nd this month.

Secondlook

I’ve been scattered lately when it comes to art…a big part of me thinks that the “old days” when I participated in many more swaps and round robins….before postage got too out of hand…I was forced out of my comfort zone and in the process grew as an artist.

This post was definitely from those days. Have a look…

I completed my pages for the latest book I received in my current round robin.

The original drawings from the book were hand-painted by me with watercolor crayons. The chopsticks were shorten by breaking then shaping them in a pencil sharpener before a slight bit of whittling and sanding.

The bamboo was drawn then painted by yours truly. The fortune reads “The luck that is ordained for you will be coveted by others”

I’ve never done any Asian themed art before…at least not consciously. I did do a mixed-media painting a while back that ended up having an Asian flare.

Hope you enjoyed this second look at my post from January 2008

It’s fun to see how our styles and interests change over time isn’t it? Your book was/is really lovely! of course I’m a fan of Asian art, and you did a great job working in watercolor crayons!

I look back on the art I made when I was participating in a lot of swaps and I think my days of GOOD mixed media art have passed. Now I create for myself, and it’s much more scattered and not as good. I sure like what you shared for this month’s second look, because your comments about growing as an artist really struck a chord with me.

I remember how you didn’t much care for Asian art, but created something simply because it WAS out of your comfort zone. It’s a wonderful entry and I’m so glad you shared it, as well as your feelings for your second look on the 2nd.

BTW, do you remember requesting the Quote swap I showed this month? You wanted me to host, but the swap was your idea, and for that I’m very, very thankful.

Nice look back, Halle. The Asian inspired pages are lovely. Years ago I participated in a lot of challenges which helped me to grow, too. I miss them!

I understand what you mean when you stated working in other’s journals forced you out of your comfort zone. These journal pages are awesome and I hope the owner truly appreciated your work. While I miss swapping art journals and working in other’s books, I am enjoying creating my own.

    Great look back Halle!
Asian themed art is a nice challenge all in itself and your pages look lovely.
I too used to participate in lots of swaps.
That became less fun for assorted reasons.

I enjoy using Asian themed items myself, especially since there is a large Asian community here and items are easy to come by. I like your bamboo drawings.
